Last night, the governor of California signed SB1172 into law, officially making the dangerous practice of “conversion” therapy illegal to perform on minors.  ”Conversion” therapy is essentially any therapy that attempts to change ones sexual identity or orientation through mental manipulation.  This kind of therapy has been highly condemned by nearly every major mental health organization.  

Hopefully, this decision will pave the way for similar legislation across the country and at the very least, it’s raising awareness about this highly damaging and destructive practice.  Two therapists in Pennsylvania are currently being investigated by both the state and the American Psychological Association, after professional and ethics complaints were filed based on evidence that they perform this type of therapy.
