Eating Consciously

Recently, there has been a controversy regarding Lada Gaga seen wearing fur.  Of course, PETA has jumped at the chance to get media coverage by sending her a letter.  Many animal rights activists have joined the band wagon to denounce her fur-wearing habits and we still don’t even know if it was real or not.

Let’s be clear, the unnecessary use and exploitation of any nonhuman animal for any reason is morally reprehensible.  The thing is - why are we attacking Lady Gaga for wearing fur?  Did we expect her not to?  As she pointed out herself, it would be hypocritical of her to condemn fur, when she is not vegan and wears plenty of other animal products all the time. 

PETA has long blasted people for wearing fur that aren’t vegan and has also endorsed many celebrities who have come out against fur that aren’t vegan.  This makes no sense.  Why are we placing fur at some level of increased moral objection?  All animal exploitation is equal and why are we confusing people by sending a message that “Well, kill animals all you want, but as long as you don’t wear fur, it’s all good?”

Nonhuman animals slaughtered and exploited for leather and wool suffer just as greatly, if not more so than those skinned for fur.  Why are we spending time attacking people who already aren’t vegan for wearing fur?  Now, if Ellen Degeneres was seen wearing fur, then by all means it would be appropriate to question her, but why on Earth would we be wasting our efforts basically calling out someone who isn’t vegan for not being vegan?

Honestly, this makes about as much sense as sending a letter to and attacking Ted Nugent for being photographed eating a piece of chicken.  This whole attack on Lady Gaga  is a complete waste of time and lacks any logic whatsoever.  Why not spend our time educating people about why it’s wrong to use nonhuman animals at all, instead of trying to convince people that fur is the most evil thing in the world?
